Overview
We are committed to building a more sustainable future and have taken the first step by measuring our carbon footprint using the SME Climate Hub calculator. Our total emissions currently stand at 1,672 tonnes of CO₂e, with the majority coming from our supply chain, materials, subcontractors, and transport. In response, we’ve developed a 1-Year Emissions Reduction Roadmap aimed at reducing our environmental impact by 10–20% over the next 12 months. As a proud member of the SME Climate Hub, we’ve also pledged to reach net zero by 2050, in line with the UN’s Race to Zero campaign. Our roadmap focuses on implementing practical actions with measurable results, regularly assessing progress, and tracking each initiative to ensure accountability. Sustainability is not only the right thing to do—it matters to our customers. It strengthens our reputation, influences buying decisions, and brings real cost savings through reduced waste and energy use. Our journey continues, and we’re excited to lead by example
Our dedicated staff recently participated in a beach clean-up at Colwyn Bay. After a busy week in the office and on sites, our team volunteered to pick up litter, demonstrating our commitment to environmental stewardship. Through this initiative, we have made a positive impact on our local environment, fostering a cleaner and more sustainable coastline for our community to enjoy. We encourage others to join us in caring for our beautiful surroundings, as every effort counts towards preserving the natural beauty of Wales. Thank you to all staff who participated and contributed to this meaningful cause.
As part of our commitment to sustainability, we’ve taken action to eliminate single-use plastic bottles from our operations.
Previously, we were using over 1,000 single-use plastic bottles every year—equivalent to 25.8 kg of plastic waste. To address this, we provided all staff with reusable Ocean Bottles, which are B Corp certified and contribute to ocean plastic collection efforts. We also installed a central water fountain to make it easy and convenient for staff to refill their bottles throughout the day.
The impact has been significant. We’ve eliminated 1,032 plastic bottles annually and reduced 25.8 kg of plastic waste each year. These changes have also helped to boost employee engagement in sustainability initiatives and supported the funding of the collection of the equivalent of 24,000 plastic bottles worth of ocean-bound plastic.
This is a small but powerful step in our wider environmental strategy—and we’re just getting started
We’ve transformed the way we work by moving from printed A0 and A1 sheets to a fully digital platform. This shift has saved approximately 2,229 m² of paper annually—the equivalent of preserving 4.3 trees—and has reduced our carbon emissions by 342 kg of CO₂ per year through savings in paper, ink, and energy. We’re also avoiding the use of 32 litres of ink, cutting waste and improving efficiency.
By embracing targeted automation and digital tools, we’re not only streamlining internal processes and reducing human error, but also reinforcing our commitment to sustainability through smarter resource use. As we look ahead to 2025, we’ll continue tracking automation metrics monthly, collecting annual user feedback, and providing training aligned with the latest industry innovations.
At KHS, we are committed to reducing our carbon footprint by 10–20% across all emission scopes—direct, energy-related indirect, and supply chain—by 2025–2026. To achieve this, we aim to source over 50% of our energy from renewable sources and reduce diesel use by 10% through improved logistics, driver awareness, and incentive programs. We will host sustainability-themed toolbox talks every fortnight and enhance our material choices by working closely with suppliers through our Supplier Sustainability Survey, requiring them to meet at least 50% of our 18 green criteria. We are also prioritizing sustainable procurement, green transportation, biodiversity support, and eco-friendly building practices. Additionally, we’re committed to raising environmental awareness among our staff, engaging with communities on conservation efforts, and investing in sustainable innovations to ensure a lasting positive impact.
